Abstract

To compare color stability of microfilled and nanohybrid composite resins in relation to different immersion solutions and polishing techniques. Two nanohybrid composite resins (Ceram X One Universal, Dentsply Caulk and Charisma Diamond, Heraeus Kulzer) and two microfilled composite resins (Metafil CX, Sun Medical Co. and Gradia direct, GC Corporation) were used to fabricate disc-type resin specimens (6 mm in diameter and 2 mm in height) and were photopolymerized. The specimens were polished using two one-step polishing systems (One Gloss, Shofu Dental Corporation and Enhance, Dentsply Caulk) and were immersed in three solutions (sterile distilled water, Coca-Cola, and Ceylon Tea). Discoloration was observed using a VITA Easyshade V digital spectrophotometer (Model DEASYCHP, VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Sackingen, Germany) at 1 week and 4 weeks after immersion. Data were analyzed using a threeway repeated-measures ANOVA with a significance level of p<0.05. Tukey¡¯s test was also conducted for post-hoc analysis. ¥ÄE was significantly different depending on the composite resin, polishing technique, and immersion solution (p<0.05). Enhance, in conjunction with polishing paste, had greater discoloration resistance than did One Gloss. The nanohybrid composite resin was more resistant to discoloration than the microfilled composite resin. Color stability was affected by the polishing technique, storage media, and composition of the material.
